Because this issue with microbial growth is based on water activity, there are specific government compliance parameters for a variety of different products that need to be kept shelf stable. Cannabis is one of those, and there are standards set up in order to help people with compliance. So one of the standards is for cannabis. And that is the ASTM D8196 for determining water activity in cannabis flower. The measurement of water activity or equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) is a key parameter in the quality control of moisture-sensitive products or materials. If there is too much water in a product, there is a risk of microbial growth and water migration.
Water Activity Testing
Once your sample is received, it will be scanned into our laboratory information management system(LIMS) and updated in Metrc. Your sample will be labeled and safely stored in our secure temperature controlled locker until scheduled testing begins.
Our automated homogenization and sample prep process greatly reduces test variability and human error not only through precision robotic movements, but by tracking your sample through our sophisticated software, while uploading results in real time.
By measuring the relative humidity around a sample, aW can be then measured as water chemically unbound and free to migrate.
Upon test completion, your results will be verified by one of our qualified team members. Your certificate of analysis (COA) will be promptly updated and emailed to you, while the batch is updated in Metrc.
What We Test For
Must be < 0.65aW in plant material & < 0.85aW in Cannabis product.
